Survey on Management of Waste from Fish Markets in Panvel

The NSS and DLLE Unit of the College with an intention to collect the data about Management of Waste from Fish Markets in Panvel. The College organized the survey and awareness program on 20-12-2023, under the guidance of I/C Principal Mrs.Sanvi Deshmukh Ma’am by Asst. Prof. Raghav Sharma, Dr. Mamta Goswami, Asst. Prof. Ravnish Bector and Dr. Kranti Bhovate.

Background

ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai and Fishworkers Welfare Federation of India, (FISHFED, India), Navi Mumbai, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 27th September, 2022 for transferring the CIBA-Plankton production technology on non-exclusive basis. CIBA-Plankton is a value added product developed from fish waste and trimmings. It helps in maintaining a healthy phytoplankton and zooplankton bloom in shrimp and fish culture, reduces the requirement of formulated feed without affecting growth and production performance. On the other hand, the process helps in environment friendly disposal of fish market wastes, thus transforming WASTE INTO WEALTH.

Fish waste processing unit has been setup right at the Diwale Gaon fish market, Belapur, Navi Mumbai to make the market as zero waste model fish market under Swachh Bharat initiative.

Survey

The survey was carried out at two locations being Uran Naka Fish Market and Khanda Colony Fish Market. The survey started with making teams among the students and dispersing them in teams with respective faculties for data collection in both online and offline mode. The survey form contained various easy to answer fields and a dropbox for uploading photo of the respondents. Total responses collected over more than 1 hour was 74 in number.

Purpose

The survey is objected to collect data about waste management policy in operation, willingness of shopkeepers to upgrade to a better disposable policy and make them aware of CIBA-Plankton.

The College will be submitting this data to various governing and regulating authorities for their perusal and needful.

The volunteers were able to successfully collect satisfactory data from the Survey.
