Inauguration of Late Shri. Janardan Bhagat Lecture Series by Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay Oka, Judge, Bombay High Court

Janardan Bhagat Shikshan Prasarak Sanstha, one of the leading educational institutions in Raigad District completed 25 years and all the educational institution under its wings are celebrating Silver Jubilee Year, by organizing various academic and cultural events.

Under the guidance of Shri. Ramsheth Thakur, Chairman, Janardan Bhagat Shikshan Prasarak Sanstha and Shri. Y. T. Deshmukh, Vice Chairman, Janardan Bhagat Shikshan Prasarak Sanstha, Bhagubai Changu Thakur College of Law, New Panvel, organized Late Shri. Janardan Bhagat Memorial Lecture Series. Having regards to the inspirational work of Late Shri. Janardan Bhagat in the educational field, this lecture series is given his name, in this silver jubilee year of Sanstha. Dr. Mrs. Shitala S. Gavand, the Principal, took initiative for organizing this Lecture Series.

Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay S. Oka, Judge, High Court, Bombay the senior most Judge of Bombay High Court, next to Chief Justice inaugurated this lecture series on 27th October 2018.

The event started with a short video clip of flashback of the events organized in the college followed by the arrival of the dignitaries on the dais. After garlanding the photo frames of Devi Saraswati, Late Smt. Bhagubai Changu Thakur and Late Shri. Janardan Bhagat, the lecture series was inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay S. Oka, Judge, High Court, Bombay by the lightening of the lamp.

Dr. Mrs. Shitala S. Gavand, Principal felicitated the Chief Guest Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay S. Oka, Judge, High Court, Bombay with shawl, shrifal, bouquet and memento and statue of Lord Ganesha. Shri. D. R. Deshpande, CJSD, Panvel was felicitated with a bouquet by Asst. Professor Mrs. Sandhya Balakrishnan, Mr. Sachindra Shetye, Advocate High Court, felicitated with a bouquet by Asst. Professor Mrs. Sarita Samel, Mr. Niranjan Mundaragi, Advocate High Court, felicitated with a bouquet by Asst. Professor Mrs. Deepali Babar and Dr. Mrs. Shitala Gavand was felicitated with a bouquet by Ms. Mrunmayee Khambete, last year student of three years course.

Thereafter Dr. Shitala Gavand delivered welcome address and introduced the chief guest and other dignitaries and she explained the concept and importance of this lecture series and said this fest of knowledge would be helpful to the students for expanding horizons of knowledge. She said that due to the presence of Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay S. Oka, Judge, High Court, Bombay this day has become extremely important in the journey of BCT College of Law.

 Shri. D. R. Deshpande, CJSD, Panvel in his speech pointed out the importance of quality legal education and said that with good legal education we will get a good advocate and in turn good judges. He said that it is the duty of each and every person associated with the legal profession to ensure that the faith of common man on the judiciary is always maintained.

Adv. Sachindra Shetye congratulated college for organizing such lecture series and pointed out the importance of such lecture series and other academic events in personality development. Due to a large number of law colleges, the competition in this profession has been increased significantly and hence the students should make an honest endeavor to acquire competence by taking advantage of the activities organized by the college.

The Chief Guest, Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay S. Oka, Judge, High Court, Bombay while inaugurating this lecture series delivered the lecture on the topic Challenges before Legal System in India. He briefly explained the importance of legal education as well as the judicial system. He expressed his concern for the huge pendency of the cases and the pointed out that the advocate must come forward to assist the judges in early disposal of the cases. The advocate must always remember that they are the officers of the Court and not the mouthpiece of their client. He advised the advocates as well as students that well preparedness in the matter by advocate would reduce the tendency of seeking dates. He further advice law students to focus on other options viz. judiciary, the teaching profession, prosecutor and government pleaders apart from merely thinking of becoming an advocate after completing law course. He advises the audience to work hard and not to run behind money, as money automatically follows the hard work. Most importantly he also expressed his personal view on live streaming of judicial proceedings and cautioned the advocate that in the event of live streaming of judicial proceedings the advocate will always be subjected to the critical scrutiny of their performance and conduct before the court. He further expressed that the live streaming of proceedings will reduce the instances of wrong reporting of the case by media.

Thereafter during question and answer session, Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay S. Oka gave answers to a lot of questions asked by the students.

At this event Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay S. Oka also gave certificates of merit to the first three rank holders in two academic competitions i.e. First Intra College Moot Court Competition and First Intra College Drafting Competition.

For this program Advocate Vinayak Koli, Advocate Chetan Jadhav, and Advocate Amey Savlekar were also present. Adv. Shreekant Gavand, Addl Public Prosecutor, High Court, Bombay assisted the principal madam in organizing this lecture series, was also present for this event.

Ms. Pranali Railkar, 3rd Yr. LLB hosted the programme and Mr. Shivam Tiwari 5th Yr. BLS, LLB proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was concluded with the national anthem.

In this lecture series, lecture of Shri. Ram Apte, Senior Counsel, High Court, Bombay on the topic “Overview of Revenue Litigation” is scheduled on 28/10/2018, lecture of Shri. Niranjan Mundragi, Advocate, High Court, Bombay on the topic “Criminal Trial” is scheduled on 29/10/2018 and lecture of Shri. Sachindra Shetye, Advocate, High Court, Bombay on the topic “Law of Writs” is scheduled on 29/10/2018.
